In 1934, Bill Wallace was Rice University's first football All-American. He was a two-time All SWC halfback and led the Owls to their first Southwest Conference title in that 1934 season. Wallace was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1978. He passed away in 1993 at the age of 80.
On March 9, 2001, the #8 seed Baylor Bears defeated the #1 seed Iowa State Cyclones 62 to 49 in the Big 12 men's basketball tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. Later in the day, the Texas Longhorns defeated the Oklahoma State Cowboys 55 to 54 at the Kemper Arena. DeMarcus Minor from Baylor was the leading scorer in the tournament. He scored 67 points in the 3 games that Baylor played.
