Clint Murchison Jr. was the original owner of the Dallas Cowboys. His hands-off approach enabled general manager Tex Schramm, coach Tom Landry and scouting and personnel director Gil Brandt to perform their duties without interference from the owner. Most feel that his business style allowed the Cowboys to have 20 consecutive winning seasons from 1966 to 1985. Regarding how Murchison viewed his family fortune,he said, Money is like manure. If you spread it around it does a lot of good, but if you pile it up in one place, it stinks like hell.


On this day in 2007, long time Texas A&M basketball coach Shelby Metcalf died. In his 26 � years at A&M, Metcalf became the winningest coach at A&M and in Southwest Conference history. His overall record was 438 and 306. The Aggies won 6 SWC titles and made 5 NCAA tournaments. Texas A&M also played in 4 NIT tournaments.


Wade Phillips became the third native Texan to be named head coach of the Dallas Cowboys on this day in 2008. Phillips joined Texans Tom Landry and Jimmy Johnson as the head coach of the Cowboys.
