Amateur boxing's Golden Glove Tournament, was first held on March 24, 1928. This first Golden Glove match was between the Chicago and New York City teams. During the years, the Golden Gloves tournament has expanded all over the United States and Europe. In 1971, Fort Worth, Texas was the host city for the Golden Gloves Tournament. Dick Menchaca became the first Texan to be crowned a national Golden Glove champion in 1940. Donald Curry, who was a Golden Glove champion from Fort Worth, Texas, in 1980, went on to become the welterweight champion of the world.
